The fuse is fixed. The unpaid invoice still needs chasing.

The lights are back on and the tools are packed away. The invoice is still unpaid. For a self-employed electrician, following up often falls to the end of the day, when there is little time left for admin.

Payment reminders are easy to put off. You might be back on site, driving to the next job or finishing quotes. Meanwhile, the invoice sits in your inbox and the expected payment is still missing.

Chasing payment takes time from paid work

It is a common problem. In a survey commissioned by Metals4U and reported by Electrical Times, 75% of UK electricians surveyed said a customer or contractor had disputed or withheld payment in the previous 12 months.

The Office of the Small Business Commissioner found that 22% of UK businesses surveyed spent staff time chasing late payments. Among those affected, the average was 86 hours per year. A GoCardless report, based on a survey commissioned from the Federation of Small Businesses, found that 34% of surveyed small businesses spent up to four hours a week writing letters or calling customers about payment.

Those hours come out of the working week. So does the effort of finding the invoice, checking previous messages and writing a reminder that is clear without making a routine follow-up feel like a confrontation.

“The reminder should be easy to check, sound like your business and wait for your say before it goes out.”The practical test for invoice chasing

What changes when the crew handles the draft

WorkMate OS has named AI teammates for tasks such as accounts. They share one Brain, where business facts and corrections are available across the crew. Your brand voice, tone and banned words are stored there, too, so you do not have to retype them for each task.

For an overdue invoice, the crew can prepare a clear, polite follow-up using information your business has provided. You review and approve the message before it goes to the customer. The crew cannot invent a payment promise or decide that a disputed bill is settled.

The activity log shows what ran, when it ran and what it produced. You can check that work alongside your usual invoice records.

What to do with the AI news

If you have heard that AI can help with invoices, there is nothing to install or configure. The question is whether it can take care of repeated drafting while you stay in control of what the customer receives. In WorkMate OS, the crew prepares the chase. You approve the message.

That works best when the invoice is straightforward. If the customer disputes the work or amount, you need to see the facts and decide how to handle the conversation. A reminder can cover routine wording, but it cannot make that judgement for you.
