The phone rings halfway up the ladder. Who takes the call?

The WorkMate team · 4 min read · 12 October 2026

You’re halfway up a ladder, both hands busy, when a new customer calls. It isn’t safe to stop and answer, so the phone rings out. That could be the enquiry that goes to another builder.

It’s a familiar choice: keep working or stop to pick up. Calling back later only helps if the customer is still looking.

A missed call can mean a missed job

In a 2022 survey of more than 220 UK tradespeople, Fix Radio, reporting the Builders Station survey, found that 60% struggled to answer the phone while at work and 34% believed they had lost work because they could not answer.

You shouldn’t have to answer every call with a tool in your hand. Give the caller a way to explain what they need, then pick up the details when the job allows.

Let the voice mate take the first call

WorkMate OS has a voice module designed to answer a real phone number. While you’re on site, the voice mate can take the first call and capture the caller’s request. Check what happened in the activity log, then decide what to do next.

The voice mate is part of a crew with named jobs and one shared Brain. Details it records can be available to the other mates, so the caller doesn’t have to explain the enquiry from scratch. For anything sent to a customer, you review and approve it first.

Keep the call useful and honest

A first call doesn’t mean every job can be booked on the spot. The mate needs clear rules about the services you offer, where you work and what it can confirm. If a caller asks for something outside those rules, it should come back to you.

The customer can have that first conversation while you finish the task. Later, check what was said and decide whether to call back, quote or book.

How it fits into your week

You can keep working on site as usual. The voice module takes calls while you’re busy, and the activity log shows what it handled. When it’s safe to stop, review the enquiry and choose the next step.

If paperwork is the bigger drain, see how a shared Brain can keep a correction in reach across the crew. For more on calls during hands-on work, read what a phone call can keep moving while you are on the job.
